Island Survival Game

Text-based survival game written in C where you gather food and water, send messages in bottles and build a raft to escape the island

This text-based adventure game was my big homework for the university’s Software laboratory 1 course, where we learned the C language. Its original name, Sziget, is Hungarian for island. You are shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and your goal is to stay alive and get rescued. Every day you choose one of seven activities: you can gather food, collect water, rest or explore the island hoping to find driftwood and washed-up bottles. The bottles can carry messages that a passing ship may pick up, a few logs make a fire that nearby ships may notice, and if you collect enough wood you can even build a raft and try to escape on your own. Rainy days bring more water than dry ones, tiredness makes you find less of everything, and both exploring and rafting carry the risk of a fatal accident.

The game runs in the Windows console and was written entirely in C. It was a nice excuse to use practically everything we covered during the semester: separate .c and .h files, state machines, structs and enumerated types, linked lists, dynamic memory management, two-dimensional arrays, reading and writing text files, bit operations and command line arguments.
