Baby Busy Board

A busy board is a Montessori-inspired activity board for babies: a collection of everyday objects and mechanisms fixed to a piece of wood that little hands are free to poke, turn, flip and pull. Instead of a toy that plays by itself, every latch, rope and switch responds with immediate tactile, visual or audible feedback, so the baby learns by experimenting. This kind of self-directed play builds fine motor skills and teaches cause and effect long before words can.

The modules come from three worlds, with plenty more squeezed in between: everyday objects like an old phone, a mirror, a door handle, ropes and a zipper; moving parts like a rotating dial with hand-painted animal figures, cogs, small doors, wheels and a fidget spinner; and noisemakers like a bell, a horn and a door knocker. My favourite corner is the custom electronics panel, where real household light switches control an LED strip and a blinking bike light, powered from battery packs hidden on the back.

Nearly everything was built or adapted by hand: the animal figures got individual paint jobs, the dial and the little doors were glued up from plywood, and every module was test-fitted on the workbench before the final assembly on the big pine board.
